I've been bugging Anna for around 6 months about getting another dog. I thought it would be fun. Anna thought it was crazy but after Pika left Durham for DC, it filled a large void in the Quarles household. What better way to fill that void then to get a vibrant, active, noisy, stinky puppy?!?!

So last Tuesday, after searching the internet, we decided to rescue a golden retriever mix puppy. At first, I wanted a pure bread golden (Like Rocco...haha) but Anna thought it would be awesome to rescue a dog that otherwise might not make it. She's always trying to help people and animals alike. We got this dog indirectly from the Robeson County animal shelter, which apparently is a high kill shelter towards the beach. We've had her since Tuesday, May 27th and we've had a blast so far...Here is a pic, her name is Indigo but we call her Indy.

We're Married...and check out Jason Ko's face!!

Wow...What a weekend. We became friends in 9th grade as innocent freshman at Durham Academy. When I think of Dave, the first image that comes into my head is his Funkin Gonuts shirt and Timb's (is that how the kids spell it?) he wore to school everyday.

Dave moved away from Durham when we were juniors but we managed to stay friends throughout, which is pretty rare I'd say. He always is good for some humor, mostly inadvertent humor, but humor nonetheless.

Dave has a new nickname that we're really trying to get to stick. It comes from our trip to get fitted for tux a few weeks back. Pikason, Bennett, Dave and I all went over to the mall. Dave likes to eat (he's not a big dude, just has a faster metabolism then most) and we were joking around with him about it (as usual). As Dave was getting sized, we joked that his neck was going to be 18 inches (which is huge)...We started taunting him which chants of "Diez y Ocho" Clap Clap...and so on. Sure enough, his neck was 18 inches and we erupted in laughter, even the tuxedo people were getting a laugh out of it.

So that's his nickname and I ask you to please call him Diez y Ocho when you see him.

(So turns out Dave does not have an 18 inch neck but the lady found it so funny she just told us he had an 18 inch neck. Nearly 10 years later, Pika is in his 2nd year at Duke's Sanford School of Public Policy and my roommate at Valley Run. Freshman and sophomore years were pretty blurry so I'm not sure how we actually became good friends. I'm sure it had something to do with living on the same hall and pledging the same fraternity. For all of us who've had the pleasure of drinking with Pika, well, I'm going to keep my mouth shut and just say this: I call it "crazy eyes" and I they don't come out as much as they used to...I did get to see them at my Bachelor Party but I don't expect to see them at the reception...Maybe the rehearsal dinner.

Pika is probably one of the smartest guys I know, in that really not annoying way which actually is kind of annoying. When I take off Thursday and Friday to watch hours upon hours of commercials in between college basketball's greatest showcase: The NCAA Tournament.

You may be asking yourself: What the hell does this have to do with the wedding?

Many of you know that my only requirement for a wedding date was that it didn't fall within basketball season. It seemed like a smart idea at the time, but now I'm realizing that maybe it was plain stupid. Because now, wedding planning is during basketball season and that's going to really cramp my style.

For instance, tomorrow, we have wedding tasting from Noon until 2 corresponding exactly with the 2nd day of the 1st round of the NCAA tourney. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm psyched to be doing the tasting but what if Duke were playing at noon tomorrow? What would I have done then? Seriously, that would have been a big deal and I fear that Anna would not have been happy with my decision.

Luckily, we avoided that catastrophe, but I have to be realist: March Madness is full of surprises and somewhere down the line, my basketball life and wedding planning life will have a head on collision.

Until then...Go To Hell Carolina.

Final Cake Tasting

Let me tell you guys...I'm psyched about our wedding cake. We went to Edible Art on Saturday morning to finalize what kind of cake we wanted for the reception. There was something about the cake that I loved, but I couldn't figure it out. Turns out, all of their cakes are actually pound cake recipes, which make them dense and flavorful.

I'm not going to tell you the different flavors we picked, but I will tell you this: Cake for breakfast is a phenomenal idea and something I plan to do more often. I'm sure people will leave off their names, how many people are coming, etc. This is going to be a fun 6 weeks.

Groomzilla

Well I had a moment recently and I freaked out a bit on Anna because we haven't sent the invitations out yet. On top of that, Anna decided to order "special" stamps and they aren't going to be here for a few days. So those of you who are concerned about whether or not you got invited to the wedding, don't worry the invites haven't been sent out yet.

I've been pretty laid back with all this wedding planning, but this is my one sticking point. I want the invitations out the door! Maybe it's because once they are out the door there is no looking back. Maybe it's because I want everyone to have ample time to make their travel plans from around the world. Whatever my reasons, we officially had our first wedding argument.

Wine, wine and more Wine...

This was a big weekend for the Hall/Quarles wedding. MOG, Anne Quarles, flew in on her private Jet (Read: Express Jet) and joined Anna and myself for an array of wedding activities, all of which included a bit of alcohol.

I took Friday off so that I could chauffeur my mother from the airport to the University Club to meet with our rehearsal dinner point of contact. Anna joined us around 20 minutes into the lunch meeting and we all ordered. Of course, the meal was "taken care of" by the University Club, which makes you wonder how much money this whole thing is going to cost. Anyway, I digress. They allowed us to sample 4 of their "house" wines and we didn't come away all that impressed, especially for $30 a bottle. What we did come away with was a great menu for the dinner. What are we going to have? Well, you'll just have to wait and see. I will say this, it's southern.

All that wine at lunch made me a bit sleepy but I stayed strong through the rest of the afternoon. We went out to dinner with Anna, Pika and MOG to Watts Grocery, a newish restaurant in Durham, had more wine, a really good meal and some espresso to keep us up until 2 AM.

Later that night, Bennett, the Best Man, made it in from DC. His main purpose of the trip was the watch Duke beat up on St. Johns. Purposefully, we did not let on as to how much wedding stuff would be happening...

Part 2 later...Will include: wine tasting, and Tuxedo fittings and more wine tasting.

Tuxedo's!!

I'll just come out and say it: I don't want to wear a tuxedo that matches what the bridesmaids wear. If I remember correctly we began our friendship during our Senior Challenge in the mountains of North Carolina, where the guys had to take turns carrying the girls over-packed bags, which were probably full of make up and high heels. I'm not sure if Bennett has even seen this picture before, but I'm pretty sure it's the first picture we took together. Is that weird? Some may ask, "Do I even have the first picture Anna and I took together"? The answer to that question is, "I think so". Anyway, I digress...we have to do some "before and after" pictures of Bennett because I swear the kid looked like he was 12 senior year in high school (1998).

Bennett currently lives in Washington, DC but because of his obsession with Duke athletics (much like my obsession with Duke athletics but with a tad bit more crazy involved), he spends around 10 weekends a year down in Durham drinking his way through Duke football games and being kind enough to take the extra basketball tickets which my parents are so kind of give.

Due to his girlfriend's obsession with food, he's also a regular contributor on the food blog Endless Simmer, where he posts "artsy pictures" of food and booze.

I hope that everyone is supportive of Bennett during the wedding because this is his first time being a best man and he's really nervous about giving a toast. Please make sure to heckle and taunt him during the rehearsal dinner.

I will leave you with some Bennett pictures from the past 10 years (please contact for additional pictures that may or may not embarrass Bennett):

Bennett and I on Senior Challenge in 1997. Unfortunately, back in 2001, they decided to call it quits. I think a little piece of me died when they decided to break up. Anyway, I'm continued to check up on their website called the Melon Patch, and much to my surprise I saw a post about them having a concert at Lincoln Theater in Raleigh! As I told Anna, this is the most exciting day of my life (until I get married of course)...For those of you in the area (and anyone who wants to make the trip to see me sing at the top of my lungs for 3 hours) mark March 29th on your calendar and get ready for the best concert of your life!

Groomsmen- Scott Quarles

Starting at "Best Brother" is Scott Quarles.

Some may remember him curly haired Darryl lookalike. Well, not much has changed except he's now a 6'2", 185 lb, 21 year old junior in college who has his own apartment in Birmingham, Alabama. I'm ecstatic to have him as part of our wedding party. Over the last few years we've gone to Paris and Amsterdam together, been to a Duke @ Alabama football game (pictured below), and been to NYC a few times for Duke basketball games. I can still beat him up, which is refreshing but he's certainly not as gullible as he used to be (ask him to tell you the story about how Leigh and I convinced him that we were all aliens and we had abducted him). Here are a few pictures from the past few years. Sorry I don't have any from when he was a kid but the digital camera age really didn't hit the Quarles household until 2004.

He cleans up nice doesn't he? There I said it. Anna says that doesn't actually make her mad. What makes her MAD is that I lose things that are important to me ALL THE TIME (or drop them in the toilet by accident).

Ipod- dropped in toilet
Swiss army watch- left in a bag that we gave to goodwill (luckily Anna saw it before giving it away). I had misplaced it for 4 months.
New Ipod- lost for a week, found under the seat of my car.

Maybe we should be looking at the positives of the above...I, or someone else, has always found what I've lost.

So as we begin this search for the male ring, I've been instant that we don't buy an expensive one. I understand that the ring is a symbol of our love and our marriage and I shouldn't lose it. I do understand that. But let's be realistic here: I am 27 years old and have never been good at keeping up with things. I've never worn a ring for more then a week (when rings were cool for guys back in the late 90's...at least I thought they were cool).

So I don't want to buy a $500 ring. I want to by a $50 ring. This pisses my mom off. This pisses my sister off. My brother just laughs and shakes his head at me.

I'm not trying to offend them women out there, although I know I am good at that. I just want them to be realistic, and maybe that's too much to ask?

Off to the Big Apple

Anna and I will be meeting my parents and my brother in New York City tonight for an early Quarles Christmas. Since my last post, here's what's been going on (get ready, a lot has gone on).

1. Anna has a new job working in Butner, NC in the adolescent unit of John Umstead Hospital. She started today.

2. I started a new job, still at Eurosport, but now as a Regional Manager. I now manage people, not soccer club business. Totally different.

3. We received our "Save the Dates" and now need to mail them out.

4. We visited my parents out in Kansas City and drove my brothers car 17 hours back to Durham, because...

5. Anna's car was in the shop for 3 weeks due to an "Oil sludge" issue. I wouldn't recommend bringing up this incident with Anna unless you really want to get on her bad side.

6. Anna had her first ever alcoholic drink on an airplane!

7. Duke football is now 1-8 and I'm offically asking for Ted Roof to be fired. So much so that I'm thinking of buying www.firetedroof.com. It's only $50.00 and I think it's worth it.

8. We had our 2nd cake tasting, this time at Edible Art in Raleigh. The cake was amazing and we're definitely going with them.

9. I ate Fois Gras for the 1st time (and liked it).

10. I ate Scallops for the 2nd time (and liked it).

11. I ate Elk for the first time (and liked it a lot).

12. For those of you who don't like, play or watch soccer, it's more of a "contact" sport then it gets credit for in mainstream American media...and because of this after a game, you can really come out bruised and broken.

(Those of you who have played soccer with Anna probably know where this is going).

Anna bruises like a freakin' peach and because of this we have implemented:

WEDDING RULE #1
Soccer will not be played for 1 month leading up to the wedding to avoid bruises on the arms legs and face.

The face part was added to the rule today because of a little elbow I took while playing on Thursday night. The bruise is really coming in nicely 36 hours after the incident. If it gets any worse, I'll definitely update the picture, but I wanted to capture proof of my semi black eye. Could you imagine if Anna or I had a freakin' black eye on our wedding day?!? We're flying out the Monday (May 5th) after our wedding
and returning on Friday, May 16th. We thought about extended it a few days longer but decided having a weekend at home to unwind before going back to the real world would be a good idea.

Anna and I are both pretty well traveled (thanks to all the great places our parents have taken us) as well as the program called "study abroad" (although not much studying actually takes place). Be that this is our first fall in the same town since 3 years ago (since Anna was in Pittsburgh), it's taking a little getting used to on her part (and I guess I should probably compromise and instead of watching 5 games, maybe just 2 or 3).

Anyway, The TV is amazing, best purchase of the year.

My Boy Graydon got Hitched!

For my loyal readers...I apologize for being away for so long. First off, the amount of food served over the course of the day was enormous. They started with a raw bar, including oysters and shrimp in conjunction with a buffet style meal including lamb, pastrami, ravioli, fish, chicken, grits (yes GRITS in New York). That wasn't all...as we were eating this, there were servers coming around with all sorts of finger food, too many to even start to list here. Needless to say, it gave us tons of ideas for our own appetizers.

Now most would think, "that's it". However, very few of you know Geoff Graydon, let alone his love for food. The group of around 120 was then escorted upstairs to the actual reception, where we had an open bar and a 4 course sit down dinner.

I wasn't kidding when I said we had a lot of food.

Roll Call...

Anna seems to think that people other then the MOG read this blog...We're both interested in who those people are. I'm still sticking with my original plan of a 10/11 day honeymoon including 7/8 nights in a villa and 3 nights on a sailboat. I was a bit worried for a few weeks because I didn't think this was actually going to work out, but last night I think I struck gold in one of my 1000 Google searches. Has anyone ever been to St. Lucia Island down in the Caribbean? It's a very small island (around 24 miles long by 15 miles wide) with clear water, mountains, volcano's and the required rain forest.

We will (hopefully) be staying at the Emerald Hill Villa, which has some views that are pretty ridiculous. It's an open-air house with a full kitchen, private pool, living room, etc. We plan to stay in the room for 3 nights, followed by a 3 or 4 night sail boat cruise around St. Lucia as well as Martinique, which is around a 6 hour sail from St. Lucia. The picture to the left is from the deck overlooking Marigot Bay. Once we get it completely finalized, we'll definitely let everyone know. Until then, I'll leave you with a view from the pool.

Things I want but can't Register for...

There are two particular items, that much to my surprise, were not available on Macy's or Crate & Barrel's registry site: A Cornhole set and a portable Beirut table. It's like they're having a contest on who can say the nicest thing about Anna, with each "one upping" the other. Enough Already!

Below are exerts of an ongoing email chain, which Anna and I are copied on:

MOG starts us off:
"I can't tell you how happy Darryl and I are. We adore Anna and she makes Jeb so happy."

Followed by a little zinger against yours truly:
"Jeb always asked if I left my intelligence at the hospital [where she works] and turned it off when I go to the driveway."

It's go time now and MOB throws in her 2 cents:
"Today we ordered The Dress!! I may :) be a bit biased, but Anna looks spectacular in it. It looks like the dress was made just for her."

MOG concurs, then remarks:
"Anna is so beautiful I can only imagine how she must look in that gorgeous dress."

That's all I've got so far. Or, I can sneak a peak on her camera and find a picture! It's her "dream" dress:

In all seriousness, I haven't seen the dress and don't plan to break into her gmail account to peak.

On a different topic, as the groom, I'm feeling a bit left out. I know this is the "bride's day" and all, but give a guy a break. Have no idea what I'm talking about? No worries, because I am currently compiling evidence (quotes) from recent emails written by both the MOB (Jean Hall) and MOG (Anne Quarles). This evidence will show the obvious "lovefest" for Anna, with very little mention of myself. Look forward to that sometime this week.

Doggie Weight Watchers

When my brother and I drove Rocco from Kansas City to Durham on Thanksgiving Day 2006, my college dog weighed in at an impressive 123 lbs. Thanks to the plethora of table scraps available from Darryl and the lawlessness that presides when there are 4 dogs, 2 cats and 3 humans living under one roof, Rocco was able to eat pretty much anything he wanted to for 3 years and topped out at 148 lbs around a year ago. We once witnessed him consume an entire cheese tray in 5 seconds flat. One second it was there, the next it was gone. Over New Year's we went on a trip to the beach. He struggled walking on the beach, going up the two flights of stairs and he wanted nothing to do with the water, which is pretty hard to comprehend considering most Golden's LOVE the water. We knew he was fat, but at that point we realized just how unhappy he was. In the below picture, we took it RIGHT before the wave hit him from behind, forcing him to jump up and run away.

Anna and I made it our 2007 goal to get Rocco back at a respectable weight, and we're happy to say that was accomplished this weekend. On Saturday morning, I took Rocco for his monthly weigh in and in only 6 months, Rocco has lost 60 lbs, with his most recent weight being 88 lbs. To be honest, he's pretty much a new dog. On sunday he went swimming in the ocean. Even better and a lot funnier, he jumped off a boat for the first time, fully submerging himself in the ocean.

Below is our perfectly thin Golden Retriever.

The Original Blog

Don't forget to check out my older posts at our Wedding website. The whole honeymoon location is still very much up in the air.
